Here's a lovely off-dry sparkling white wine from Portugal, made with Gouveio, Malvasia, Moscatel, Arinto and Códega, and it's a non-vintage bottling. Gouveio is a Douro white grape giving fresh, balanced wines with citrus and good acidity. There's Malvasia in the blend too: an ancient Mediterranean white grape family giving aromatic, often rich wines with floral, apricot and nutty notes, in both dry and sweet styles. Portugal is a goldmine of native grapes, from the zippy whites of the green northwest to the muscular reds and legendary Ports of the Douro Valley. Crack it open as a celebration starter — it loves shellfish, salty nibbles and fried bites. Serve it ice-cold.
