Mavrodaphne

What is Mavrodaphne?

Mavrodaphne means "the black laurel wreath". These productive vines are sensitive to Peronospora, oidium and millerandage. The grapes mature in early September. The wines are rich in anthocyanins and total phenols but remain strong and one-dimensional when young. Extended oak aging with controlled oxidation and bottle aging allows the juice to develop in full. Mavrodaphne can produce a port like a dessert wine which was exported throughout Europe on a large scale in the late 19th century.
