Volteface Reserva red 2024

Volteface brings us this dry red wine from Portugal, a blend of Alicante Bouschet and Syrah from the 2024 vintage. Alicante Bouschet is unusual among red grapes for its red flesh, producing intensely colored, full-bodied wines with concentrated dark fruit. There's Syrah in the blend too: a bold red grape producing dark, full-bodied wines with blackberry, black-pepper and smoky, savory notes; it is known as Shiraz in Australia. Portugal is a goldmine of native grapes, from the zippy whites of the green northwest to the muscular reds and legendary Ports of the Douro Valley. The 'Reserva' on the label usually means it's a step-up selection given a little extra aging before release. It loves rich, meaty food — think grilled red meat, braises and a wedge of aged cheese. Serve it at cool room temperature.
